Fool's Gold (Widescreen Edition)

Fools Gold (Widescreen Edition)

Description

Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson go for the gold (and the diamonds, emeralds and rubies) as a just-divorced couple who bicker and banter their way through an adventure- and laugh-packed undersea treasure hunt. McConaughey is Finn, in love with his ex (Hudson) and in deep with gangster Bigg Bunny. After eight years of searching, Finn gets a clue to the whereabouts of the Queens Dowry, a fabulous fortune that mysteriously disappeared in the Caribbean in 1715. Now all he has to do is get the gold, get the girl and get going before Bigg Bunny gets him. Directed by Andy Tennant (Hitch), Fools Gold glitters with danger, action, romance, comedy, great one-liners and a great time to be had by all!

The "gold" of the title refers to an elusive pirates booty, but it just as easily could mean the sun-washed glistening shores of Florida, or the sumptuously tanned bodies of its appealing stars, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. The whole film is awash in golden highlights, and the scenery and cinematography make the experience akin to taking a tropical holiday. Hudson and McConaughey reprise the chemistry they first exhibited in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, sparking and tangling and kvetching, while all the while the audience knows, of course, they adore each other and are perfect for each other. McConaughey is a dreamer, on the trail of a sunken pirates treasure, and Hudson his now-ex-wife, a historian who prefers life to be a little more sedate. McConaughey, as Finn, delivers impassioned speeches to Hudson, as Tess, saying, "You want history? Its in the ocean, lady!" Before you can say Romancing the Stone, Tess and Finn are grudgingly reunited in search of the booty. If the plot doesnt contain many surprises, the froth of the stars chemistry is amiable and makes for a perfect date movie. Scuba divers may find McConaugheys antics below the surface to be wildly unbelievable and usually fatal, but in the end viewers will root for him to surface, and recapture the heart of his lady love. --A.T. Customer ReviewsSluggish Treasure Hunting Adventure Romance

I know "Fools Gold" is supposed to be mindless fun. The treasure-seeking story doesnt have to be believable as long as the film is fun to watch. I liked Matthew McConaugheys "Sahara" for what it was: good, clean fun of watching our hero doing what he is expected to do. Im sorry to say this, but for me "Fools Gold" turned out a disappointing entry from Matthew McConaughey who deserves a much better film.

Matthew McConaughey is a treasure hunter Finn, who is rather single-mindedly pursuing his dream - a Spanish ship loaded with gold, which has been lost for 300 years off the coast of Florida. Kate Hudson is his wife Tess, now divorcing him as she wants a new life in college. The story is all too familiar, but not bad. However, Andy Tennant, usually a competent director (whose CV includes "Hitch" and "Ever After") tells the story in an awfully slow and confusing way.

"Fools Gold" tries to be an action-adventure-comedy-romance, but it becomes none of them. There really isnt much thrilling action to speak of, let alone thrilling adventures. To make matters worse, there isnt much comedy or romance either. The film suffers contrived situations, confusing subplots and lack of style. The action/adventures become abruptly violent as characters get shot in the foot or harpooned in the thigh. Romance or love-hate relationship of Tess and Finn doesnt convince as they talk a lot about treasures and love, but either character (with their long, boring dialogues) doesnt really look serious about what he or she is talking about.

Both stars look great, it is true, and they are clearly having a good time. But Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, formerly seen together as the leads of a romantic comedy "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," does not have enough on-screen chemistry together to make us really care. Probably they are not to be blamed, but the weak script is, as it contains so many detracting factors. Stereotypical characters--Ewen Bremmer as British sidekick Donald Sutherland as eccentric billionaire and Kevin Hart as murderous gangster (or rap star), etc--do not help, nor lack of coherent storyline that goes on and on, not knowing where to go. And as to the annoying, bikini-clad "Gemma Honeycutt" character, what can I say?

"Fools Gold" is a missed opportunity. It could have been more enjoyable like "Romancing the Stone," which was fun with two likable leads (and their charisma as stars), beautiful locations and story full of adventures. "Fools Gold" has all these things, but still fails to be entertaining, which is the greatest flaw.

There are better uses of your time. This movie is an excuse to put two pretty people in bathing suits. The main characters chemistry isnt enough to hold this story together.

not a great story to this one

Kate Hudson is always fun to watch but the story line didnt give her much to work with. Same goes for Matthew McConaughey. Maybe the expectation was too high after seeing them together in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, but I think not. This was just a pathetic story line.

If you can rent it for a buck, or if youre a huge fan of the cast members, Id say go for it. Otherwise, save your dollar.
Great Entertainment

This is one of those movies that wont be a hit with the critics, but then again, it was never meant to be. Instead, it is non-stop, light-hearted entertainment with delightful stars and a great way to spend a couple of hours.
Funny

This is a cute movie but has some scenes that are too explicit for me. Matt and Kate are funny and romantic at the same time.
