MASHs fifth tour of duty finds the 4077th operating at peak efficiency. Harry Morgan, as Colonel Sherman Potter, and Mike Farrell as BJ Hunnicutt, pumped new blood into series, and in this, their sophomore year, became integral parts of the ensemble. Gary Burghoff joined the Emmy elite for his role as company clerk Radar OReilly. William Christopher was also promoted, finally earning his opening-credit stripes for his role as Father Mulcahy. This season was also pivotal for Loretta Switts Major Margaret Houlihan. "The Nurses," one of Switts finest half-hours, humanized her rigid, by-the-book character. Margarets engagement provided the season with its dramatic arc, and set the stage for the departure of Larry Linvilles Major Burns, who by this time had wrung all the music he could from his one-note character. In addition to "The Nurses," another episode that looms large in the shows legend is the Emmy-winning "Dear Sigmund," in which weary and depressed psychiatrist Sidney Friedman sought refuge at the 4077th. This episode further fleshed out BJ, and established him as the camps practical joker. The episode "Hanky Panky," in which a compassionate BJ consoles a nurse whose marriage has fallen apart, ranks as one of his best.
Alan Aldas Hawkeye suffers physical and psychological crises in two of his most effective episodes, "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," in which he is temporarily blinded, and "Hawks Nightmare," in which the war haunts his dreams. We also see the first warning signs of sanctimony that would infect the show in later seasons. Tell us, Hawkeye--and he does, in "The Generals Practitioner"--why war is worse than hell. Whereas Hawkeye and Trapper in earlier seasons were partners in crime, Hawkeye and BJ become tireless (and sometimes tiresome) crusaders to right all wrongs in their "little corner" of the world, as witness their shutdown of a heartless junk dealer in "Souvenirs." One cure is "Movie Tonight," an ensemble episode in which camp members bond during a much-interrupted screening of My Darling Clementine. --Donald Liebenson

As the fifth season opens, the Chinese are getting too close for comfort and the 4077 has been ordered to bug-out. Unfortunately, Hawkeye, B.J. and Margaret are in the middle of critical surgery and have to keep going even as the bombing starts. The rest of the 4077 find themselves in an equally dangerous situation upon discovering that the new location that HQ has chosen for them is actually in occupied territory. Luckily the Chinese are driven back and the 4077 get to bug back to their old location.
But the real bomb, as far as Frank Burns is concerned, is when Margaret returns from a medical conference in Tokyo engaged to Lieutenant Colonel Donald Penobscott. "Howd Burns take it?" a concerned Colonel Potter asked. "Hard," Hawkeye replied. "He was clucking like a chicken last night. For nine straight hours." Potter shook his head. "Hes heading for a Section Eight." As expected, Klinger was green with envy.

I thought was good enough, though not up to the quality of season three, I enjoyed it.

Season 5 was a turning point for MASH when it started to become more of a mixture of comedy and drama otherwise known as " dramaedy ". Making William Christopher a full cast member was a good movie but clearly the biggest move was Loretta Swits character Margaret marrying someone other than Frank. I really did not the fifth season because I felt sorry for the actor Larry Linville playing Frank and later finding out that it was a nightmare for him as well for they had trailers where the actors would watch the episodes privately before it went on the air. Linville could no longer stand watching his character become a puppet and could not change his character. His character was mean-spirited and a rotten doctor and if they changed his character to be a good guy the character and the show would be destroyed. Linville had signed a five year contract to do MASH and he honored his contract by doing all five years. Linville never regretted doing MASH but he is the only actor of the show to leave and not regret the decision. Linville was well liked by the entire cast and no one wanted Linville to leave the show. Linvilles best friends were Jamie Farr and Mike Farrell on the show and tried to talk him into staying. But Linville told both that all of us all character actors and not lead actors and that his Frank Burns character could do no more and that Franks character could not expand like the others could there simply was no way out but to leave. Befor Linvilles death in 2000, he became more popular than when he was on MASH because the public realized that the actor and character were not the same person.

In every season of MASH there are some great unforgettable episodes, but mixed in every now and then youll find a forgetable one or two. BUT not in season 5. In my opinion this is with out a doubt the best season in the series.
The acting ensemble is as good as it will ever be in the series. Klinger comes up with the best ideas to get out of the army, that almost work, but never seem to. Frank is CRAZY, and you really see it here, Larry Linville is a stinking genius. The duo of Hawkeye and B.J. has melted into a comedic duo that is hard to beat. And on top of all that, Margaret gets married!
For my money the best episodes of the whole series come out of this season namely, "Dear Sigmond" and "Movie Night

I gave this to my son for graduation and he was thrilled. MASH is his favorite re-run and he loves to see it without the commercials!

I been watching mash since I was very young. I am glad to have purchased mash for one of my best friends. She loves it very much. Quality is great, delivery was a little long but its ok, I still received it in very good conditions package sense. Overall, service is great.
